Ethics review that builds trust in science and research
North Star Review Board is a new kind of IRB. We believe protocol review should be ethics-based and data-driven, like the science we review. Our staff and board members bring decades of experience in board review and operations. We offer high-quality, rapid reviews with an emphasis on collaboration, consistency, and transparency.
Quality
Quality means more than speed and convenience. We believe in minimizing the burdens on research, but we also believe that decisions must be consistent, reasoned, and justifiable. We provide unique tools to our reviewers to maintain the quality and consistency of our deliberations and to build a foundation of ethical decision making.
Expertise
We are experienced and credentialed IRB professionals. We understand the unique needs of studies and how to balance the perspectives of sponsors, researchers, and participants and the need to work collaboratively to resolve issues. We also believe in transparent communication. It is our obligation to provide accessible reasoning for our decisions to all stakeholders in the research.
Efficiency
Knowledge is a common good, whether it leads to cures for disease or to a more just society. Ethics review must not unnecessarily burden or delay responsible research.
Affordability
We are an independent non-profit RERB. Our fees reflect our costs to provide services; none of our revenue goes to investors or institutional overhead.
